The Royal Yacht Squadron is playing host to the eye-catching (and very cool) RS Elite National Championships this Olympic year, when the highly competitive regatta takes place during the prestigious RYS summer programme from 30th August to 2nd September to compete for their major annual title.

If a championship hosted in the hallowed Yacht Squadron Castle with the fleet berthed on its very own doorstep were not enough to whet the appetite, then headline sponsorship from premium brand Wight Vodka certainly completes the sensory picture. One-design RS Elites always deliver adrenalin-pumping races at their championships, so add to that the picture of Wight Vodka cocktails on the pristine RYS lawn before the big Class Dinner in the Castle and you have an idea of what this regatta is about!

No wonder that a record RS Elite fleet will take to the Solent for this championship, including a strong contingent from Ireland who have already committed to the trip, guaranteeing some of the strongest contenders for the title as well as a lively atmosphere ashore. Top Elite sailors, including defending 2011 champion Jono Brown and 2010 victor Crauford McKeon, will also be out to lift the trophy. As the RYS Yachting Secretary Chris Mason (himself no stranger to top level sailboat racing) says “The Royal Yacht Squadron is delighted to be hosting the Wight Vodka RS Elite National Championships. The regatta will come at the end of a very busy season for us, and will be a fitting finish to what is going to be a spectacular year at the RYS and in the UK. Personally, I’m really looking forward to watching high-class fleet racing from the Royal Yacht Squadron.”

Ritu Manocha, the entrepreneur behind 50° North and Wight Vodka, is understandably enthusiastic about their commitment to British sailing, “I’m very proud to be working so closely with RS Sailing and the Royal Yacht Squadron to support the RS Elite Nationals. Being an Olympic year, Wight Vodka is involved in many great events, but we’re certainly looking forward to the end of August and participating in a fantastic four days of highly competitive RS racing coupled with so many fabulous social events!”

About RS Sailing
The RS sailboat range was launched in the mid 1990s by two guys with a passion for sailing and the ambition to use the latest design developments and technology to produce boats that would move the game forward. The rest, as they say, is history. Following immediate UK success the range has steadily expanded; it is now the fastest growing sailboat brand internationally and has won multiple design awards around the globe. www.rssailing.com.

About 50° North
50° North are the creators of Wight Vodka. The company’s spirit and enthusiasm for the ocean, coupled with the centuries-old regatta traditions of the Isle of Wight (and of course a full appreciation of superior vodka!) culminated in the creation of the world’s smoothest, 42% ABV potato-based vodka. One sip of Wight Vodka will make a believer out of the most discerning connoisseur, and the company welcomes your joining a unique and elite class. www.wightvodka.com. Tack & Gybe Responsibly.

The crew at Wight Vodka and Scuttlebutt Europe teamed up yet again to determine the yachting fraternity’s favourite bar the world over, and are thrilled to announce that Wight Vodka’s 2011 ‘First in Class’ prize is awarded to IYAC in Newport, Rhode Island!

IYAC came out on top due to the massive volume of votes received by their faithful patrons and their passionate submissions in the early rounds. It is fantastic to welcome them alongside the Soggy Dollar in the BVI who won 2010’s contest, and the Peter Café Sport in the Azores who claimed the podium in 2009. This year’s contest was tight between the winner and the runners-up, including the Bitter End Yacht Club in the BVI, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya, Thailand, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Salty Mike’s in Charleston, South Carolina, the King & Queen in Hamble, England and the Pier View in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the Dog Watch in Stonington, Connecticut, the Clubhouse Yacht Club in Breskens, Holland, and Nippers in Great Guana Cay in the Abacos.

Ritu Manocha, owner of 50° North, the company behind Wight Vodka, said “I’m so glad that IYAC won this year’s competition! A few of the Wight Vodka team members spend their time on and off the water around Newport and Block Island, and with the history of the America’s Cup being battled out for so many decades in those Rhode Island waters, it’s fitting that IYAC is crowned as the 2011 worldwide favourite yachting bar. They will receive a trophy and bottle of Wight to celebrate their win, and if you find yourself in Newport you must make your way to Thames Street and enjoy a few cocktails while spinning a few tales at IYAC!”

We once again asked participants to comment about their favourite bar, and this year’s entries were both truly enjoyable if not inspirational. A sampling below for your reading pleasure!

•	This place is known as the drinking bar with a yachting problem.
•	Their ‘Lemon Crash’ cocktail was named after one of their J-24s
•	The bar supports the club…and vice versa!
•	Stunning atmosphere, especially during West Highland Week!
•	You never know if you’re going to see someone in a wedding dress or a swimsuit.
•	The commitment of the owners and patrons to several major charity events, including being founders of ‘Sail for Pride.’
•	The only pub where you find the rock stars, pro sailors and keen weekenders mixing it up together.
•	Major respect to the great Jan! Pubs like this are definitely what Sundays are made of.
•	$2.00 Bourbon Nights…Ooooh to be young again!!
•	It’s a short walk for drinks after sailing.
•	It’s walking distance back home!
•	Okay, okay…they are a client of mine and are the fastest paying on the planet.

London, England

It’s back, and it’s better than ever!

Wight Vodka’s Best Yachting Bar competition is open for your submissions, and we’re expecting another heated race! Thus far, you have voted the Peter Café Sport in the Azores as the World’s Favourite in 2009 and the Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke in the BVI in 2010. In addition to being recognized by the world’s yachting community, the bars received a trophy and prized bottle of Wight Vodka to celebrate their win.

Ritu Manocha, the entrepreneur behind 50° North and Wight Vodka, said “This contest is just too much fun! Our favourite job is reviewing all the comments we receive to choose the top ten bars. A few classics received over the years include ‘High spring tides actually flood the bar’ and ‘It was there that I was introduced to snorting Tequila,’ to ‘Its gehaktballen are the best you can get!’ and ‘Oh…it’s where I met both my husbands.’”

2011’s contest is powered-up from today and the rules of engagement are outlined below:

The Submissions – As of today, we are accepting your written recommendations for your favourite yachting bar on the Scuttlebutt Europe website at scuttlebutteurope.com/sailors-bars.html. The deadline for the submissions is Monday the 5th December. Please include your name, email, your favourite bar, the reasons for your love affair, including commentary on the atmosphere, the people, the food, and of course the drink.

The Panel Selection – A panel of judges from Wight Vodka, Seahorse magazine and Scuttlebutt Europe will read each essay and choose the Top Ten Bars to put forward for the vote. Please keep in mind that the Top Ten will be chosen based both on the quality and passion of the submission, as well as the numbers of submissions received for a particular bar. The emphasis, however, will be on the quality of your submission.

The Voting – From Saturday, the 10th December, the Top Ten Bars will be announced and the voting will begin. Voting this year will be accessed through the Scuttlebutt Europe website and will be open until Tuesday the 27th December.

The Winning Bar – The winner will be announced on 31st December and, similar to years past, the crew from Wight Vodka will be placing calls to the winning bars on New Year’s Eve to congratulate them!

From a martini lover’s viewpoint, it’s fitting that Cinzano won this year’s Wight Vodka Cup!

Cowes, England

From a martini lover’s viewpoint, it’s fitting that Cinzano won this year’s Wight Vodka Cup!

Markus Hendricks of Germany won this year’s Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race in style, covering the 190 mile course at an average speed of 65.26mph. Driving the 38ft Cinzano that Don Shead designed for Italian Renato Del Valle in 1974, the veteran craft showed a clean stern to a much younger fleet to repeat the success it had at the British Powerboat Festival on two occasions over 30 years ago.

Hendricks set a steady pace following the start and lay well down the fleet when Fury, overall leader, passed Anvil Point at the 20 mile mark. Fury, the 39ft (12.6m) American Phantom driven by Vahid Ganjavian was slowly moving further ahead of Martin Lai representing China in the PanteraPowerboat Asia. However she was to suffer mechanical problems a few miles further up the course before stuffing the bow as it tried to regain planning speed.

By Torquay, marking the halfway stage, Cinzano had crept up and was now dicing with Powerboat Asia to become a contest of its own. They raced back to the Solent several miles ahead of the remaining fleet. The leading pair lay less than ten seconds apart as they shot passed Hurst Castle six miles from the finish before Cinzano and a jubilant Markus Hendricks took the finishing flag a few minutes later.

John Moore, the organiser behind the British Powerboat Festival, said “We had a great series of races this weekend. The support of Wight Vodka was fabulous, and the crew of Cinzano were definitely appreciative of the customised hats, champagne bucket trophy and of course the bottles of Wight to commemorate their win. Many thanks to Ritu and Wight Vodka!”

Ritu Manocha, the entrepreneur behind the Wight Vodka brand, said “It’s so great to be part of the British Powerboat Festival. With Cinzano winning the cup in 2011, our mixologists are thinking ahead to next year’s cocktail reception and marrying the Cinzano extra dry vermouth with Wight Vodka to create the Wight Cinzano martini. It’s a perfect match!”

About the British Powerboat Festival

The British Powerboat Racing Club was formed in 2001 following the gala dinner held at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes celebrating the 40th running of the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes offshore powerboat race. Membership of the British Powerboat Racing Club is open to anyone interested in powerboat competition, offshore racing in particular. For more information on the British Powerboat Racing Club, please visit www.cowes2011.co.uk.

Ramsgate, England

It was another fabulous week of racing and partying in Ramsgate, with Wight Vodka cocktail receptions being enjoyed by all.

Royal Temple Yacht Club, organiser of this year’s Ramsgate Week, enthused “The skippers, crews and friends all love participating in Ramsgate Week. This year, we held three coastal races including the great ‘Round the Goodwins’ classic race, followed by the IRC East Coast Championship. Everyone loved the Wight Vodka cocktail receptions, and the Wight Vodka regatta caps for the winning crews kept everyone’s competitive spirits high. We are glad to have the support of Ritu and the 50° North crew, as Wight Vodka just adds so much to the atmosphere.”

This year’s regatta saw highly tactical racing throughout the week, with the weather being rather kind to the sailors on most days. In the end, those skippers and crews who won their classes and their trophies will no doubt be back next year to contest their victories!

Class 5 Cruiser – Frank Curtis & Carole Pickett’s J95 Just Is

Cowes, England

71 beautiful yachts competed in 2011’s Panerai British Classic Week, with Mirella winning Wight Vodka’s ‘Most Stylish Crew’ award.

Mary Scott-Jackson, the main organiser of this historic event, said “This year’s Panerai British Classic Week saw excellent racing on the water and fabulous social events shore side. Though the ultimate goal of every yacht was to place in the top of their class, we decided to present a few ‘fun’ awards as well, from the ‘Shaken not Stirred’ award for the crew going above and beyond the call of duty, to the ‘Stiff Drink Award’ for the crew getting into (and hopefully out of) a rather harrowing experience. Wight Vodka’s Most Stylish Crew Award was won by Yvon Nicholas’s Mirella crew, as they definitely lived up to the very high standards of the owner and skipper, and of course the beautiful yacht they sailed.”

The overall class winners of the Panerai British Classic Week included:

Class 1 – R A Rankin’s 1985 12 Metre ‘Italia’

Class 2 – John Lister’s 1937 ‘Wings’

Class 3 and overall Regatta Winner – Sir Michael Briggs’s 1904 ‘Mikado’

Class 4 - David Myatt’s 1948 ‘Marguerite’

Ritu Manocha, owner of the Wight Vodka brand, commented:”We just love working with Mary Scott-Jackson and Scott MacLeod as they are so passionate about delivering extraordinary regattas. The Panerai British Classic Week was enjoyed by all, and I’m glad the skipper and crew of Mirella were recognized for their achievement. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the British Classic Week.”

Hamble, England

After a light-winded first day, the sea breeze filled in at midday on Sunday, and the steady 12 knot southwesterlies gave perfect summer sailing conditions for the 2011 Impala National Championships.

Ben Meakins, who helped organize the National Championships, and himself an Impala owner, was pleased with the turnout and the tight racing conditions. “Sunday was a great day of competitive racing. The atmosphere both on the water and at the Royal Southern Yacht Club afterwards was fantastic. It was great to have the support of Wight Vodka for the Championships, and the first place winners will enjoy the bottle of WV for certain!”

The tight racing conditions saw a light wind race on Saturday, won by Celerity, with Patriot Games second and Zulu third, before the wind died completely and further races were abandoned. On Sunday, Patriot Games won the first race, with Celerity second, Polly third, Happy just a split second behind and Zulu not far behind her. The second race saw Patriot Games, Happy, Zulu and Polly switching positions throughout the race and finishing within seconds of each other, with Celerity, Uproar and Vlad not far behind. At the end of the day, Patriot Games took the overall prize, with Celerity second and Polly third overall. Congratulations go to Paul Blowers and his crew onboard Patriot Games!

“The initial design for the Impala evolved as a direct result of the formation of the Offshore One Design Council in 1977, which was set up by a group of leading yachtsmen to encourage One Design racing. There were thirty designs submitted, of which three were given the support of the council, with the Impala being a favourite. The first National Championship was held in Cowes in 1979 and was won by David Thomas, the designer.” Ben explains. “The event has been held every year since and it’s great to have the enthusiasm for the class continuing to grow.”

Ritu Manocha, owner of Wight Vodka, said ”It’s great to work with such a passionate group of owners and racers. The Hunter Impala has a solid history of competitive IRC racing, and with their determination, the class will continue to succeed and grow.”

About the Hunter Impala Offshore One Design

The Hunter Impala was approved by the Offshore One Design Council in 1977, with David Thomas being the principal designer. The class has a solid following and participates in most of the prestigious races around the United Kingdom. To find out more about the Impala, please visit their website on www.impala28.co.uk.

Bembridge, England

40 knot gusts kept the racing off shore to a minimum, but a fabulous time was had by Bembridge Sailing Club’s members this weekend, with Wight Vodka cocktails flowing strongly.

Caroline Peel, Commodore of the Bembridge Sailing Club, said “Despite some tricky weather conditions, there were seven class races held over the weekend. With strong south westerly winds, a number of races were held under the relative protection of St Helens Duver. There was a fair share of capsizes, but overall the skippers and crews had a great time and the first in class winners deserve praise for triumphing in the tough conditions!”

Plymouth, England

Plymouth Race Week launches on the 7th July with a Wight Vodka cocktail party at the Royal Western Yacht Club, and expectations are set for a wildly successful inaugural event.

Chris Arscott, Commodore of the Royal Western Yacht Club, commented “We’re so glad to have Ritu and the crew from Wight Vodka onboard to support this bi-annual regatta. From the beginning, we set the theme of Plymouth Race Week as ‘the Yachtsman’s Regatta’ as we wanted competitive racing on the water to be followed by fantastic social events off the water. As Plymouth Race Week also coincides with Plymouth’s Summer Festival, the shore side entertainment will be as spectacular as the sailing. And with Wight Vodka cocktails flowing over the bar at the Royal Western YC, the after race parties will certainly be that much more enjoyable!”

International Race Officer Mike Pearson will head-up Plymouth Race Week’s team of international and national race officials. The team are setting challenging courses both inside and outside of Plymouth’s breakwater, with races running from Thursday 7th July through Monday 11th July. With three courses planned including an extra for white sail, the race officers are designing courses to ensure excellent, competitive racing for each individual class.

Chris Arscott continued, “We first met Ritu when we held a Wight Vodka party at Pentillie Castle to bring the many teams, family and friends together for the 2009 OSTAR. That evening was very special, as it was the first time that the 33 sailors got to know one another prior to heading off across the Atlantic. Wight Vodka is so closely affiliated with British and international sailing that it’s the perfect spirit to be enjoyed during Plymouth Race Week.”

Ritu Manocha, owner of the Wight Vodka brand, said ”We just love working with Chris and the Royal Western team. They are so professional and passionate about yachting and their friendly attitude shows in everything they do. Pouring exclusive Wight Vodka cocktails will certainly support the great atmosphere building up for Plymouth Race Week!”

About Plymouth Race Week

Plymouth Race Week is the new bi-annual sailing event held from the 7th to the 11th July. Planned to be on the scale of Cowes and Cork week and utilising the City’s unrivalled waterfront and fabulous sailing waters, the Royal Western Yacht Club welcomes yachtsmen and women of all calibres to enter and be part of this inaugural regatta. To enter your yacht into Plymouth Race Week, please visit www.plymouthraceweek.org.

Oxford, England

1,600 black-tie revelers partied until the sun came up over Oxford’s Keble Ball this past weekend, with Wight Vodka cocktails providing the stimulation to carry on.

“It was a smashing evening!” said Stephen Tozer, president of the 2011 Keble Ball, “Our guests were thoroughly entertained from start to finish, with the very best food, drink and entertainment from some of the world’s favourite brands. Having the support of Wight Vodka, Jack Wills and Ernst & Young was fantastic. We felt very smug to be serving absolutely sublime British vodka (the best any of us have ever tasted). And we did so in style, from a dedicated vodka tent, complete with a hand crafted Sherlock Holmes ice luge!”

This year’s theme ‘A Scandal in Bohemia’ brought the party-goers back to the year 1891 when Keble College was in its infancy. The plot ran deep throughout the night, as those lucky enough to hold tickets to this momentous night, took pleasure in superb performances by the likes of Alex Metric, DJ Zinc, the Oxford University Big Band and cabaret & burlesque from Kiki Kaboom and Missy Fatale.

“It was just a joy to have the support of Ritu and Wight Vodka,” continued Tozer. “We pride ourselves in providing unique experiences for our guests at the Keble Ball, and the Wight Vodka martinis were a hit.”

Ritu Manocha, owner of the Wight Vodka brand, was so glad to be part of the evening’s enjoyment. “Working with Stephen and his team was a true pleasure. They came up with fantastic cocktails which started the ball rolling very well and kept the drinks flowing into the early hours. This is one party that the crew at Wight Vodka wants to be involved with for many years to come!”

About Keble College
