King & Queen in Pursuit of the Wight Vodka Racing Mark

Hamble, England

Janet Bradley, the energetic manager of The King & Queen Pub in Hamble, had something a little different in mind as she contacted the crew at 50° North in January.

“We were in the final stages of planning The King & Queen Pursuit Race, which supports our local Hamble Lifeboat, and I wanted to do something unique for this great event,” Janet said. “I heard about the Wight Vodka buoy and said to our race organisers ‘perhaps we forget about a first to the WV Mark prize and instead let’s do Most Stylish Rounding of the mark.’ Everyone jumped onboard the idea!”

Ritu Manocha, owner of the classic Wight Vodka brand, loved it. “What a perfect first chapter for our WV racing mark! Janet and her team put together a fabulous race which culminated in an afternoon party at the K&Q. Of course we agreed to provide the winning skipper with a bottle of Wight to mark the occasion and help support the Hamble Lifeboat; Fabulous!”

The blustery but dry day certainly had its fair share of events according to Janet. “First I have to give my congratulations as the winner of the Most Stylish Rounding award was Nick Stagg’s Oceanis 53 – April Dawn. Well done to Nick and his crew! The overall winner of the race was Great Scot, an Elan 410 owned by Eurof and Barbara Phillips. Congratulations on your win! One of our boats nearly sank and needed to be rescued by the very Hamble Lifeboat team we were fundraising for. As you can well imagine, when Carlo Vroon donated a bottle of Wight during the prizegiving auction, it took one of the top bids which helped towards raising nearly £900 for the Lifeboat.”

Ritu continued, “Janet and her team at The King & Queen organised an exciting day followed by a great party. I’m looking forward to working with her for many years and regatta parties to come!”
