Wight Vodka Supports the ‘Shake Off’ Cocktail Competition

Newport, Isle of Wight, England

When Matt Carey, manager of the Island’s trendiest bar, Joe’s in Newport, created the ‘Shake Off’ cocktail competition, he knew that Wight Vodka had to be the spirit of choice!

“The idea of the ‘Shake Off’ came from experiencing cocktail competitions in the UK and America,” Carey said. “The Isle of Wight is trending toward the retro-chic and upper-class market, and as a result, many of our Island’s bars and restaurants are mixing more and more cocktails for their customers. Bringing the Island’s best bartenders together to develop new drinks allows them to show off their talents and inspire others into mixing unique cocktails.”

The evening began with introductions of the competitors to the four judges on the panel. Each competing bartender was ranked on knowledge, confidence, appearance, creativity and taste. Wight Vodka was the core ingredient and the range of cocktails created included mixers from Oreo cookies and bananas to freshly ground cinnamon and strawberries.

Danny Knox, one of the top bartenders from the Island, won the overall competition with his cocktail, the ‘Drum for Cuba.’ “I was really happy to have won the Shake Off,” Danny said. “Nerves definitely got the best of me early on in the competition, but as I started talking the audience through the history of Wight Vodka, the relevance of the ingredients, my reasons for mixing in a particular order, and of course the importance of the final appearance, the years of working behind a bar flooded back. Now I’m greatly looking forward to the next competition!”

Ritu Manocha, Director at 50° North, the company behind Wight Vodka, said “Congratulations to Matt and his team for putting on the first of hopefully many ‘Shake Offs.’ The evening was a success, and I can see more and more bartenders from around the Island and mainland getting involved in future competitions. We were most impressed with the overall ethos and social responsibility shown by the competitors, which focused on the customer’s enjoyment of the creation, appearance and flavour of the cocktails being presented. Well done by all and congratulations to Danny for winning the competition!”
